In recognition of travel and tourism's positive economic, social and cultural impact on the area, the Akron/Summit Convention & Visitors Bureau celebrated the 27th annual National Tourism Week, May 8 - 16, 2010. Travel and tourism is a $1.12 billion industry annually in Summit County and employs more than 19,000 hospitality professionals.
As part of the celebration, the Akron/Summit Convention & Visitors Bureau sponsored the 9th annual Zenith Awards. Recognizing contributions made by Summit County hospitality partners, an on-line ballot was available to partners and residents to cast votes across seven categories. Recipients of this year's awards include: Art/Culture - Akron Art Museum; Point of Interest/Attraction – Akron Zoological Park; Dining/Restaurant – Bricco; Community/Special Event – Akron Arts Expo; Outdoor/Recreation – Cuyahoga Valley National Park; Theatre/Entertainment - Akron Civic Theatre; and Retail/Shopping – Don Drumm Studios & Gallery. Through a separate nomination process, the Bureau also awarded the Hospitality Person of the Year Award to Dirk Breiding, VP of Sales for the Akron/Summit CVB.
Four additional Zenith Awards were presented to: Hospitality Partnership, Cleveland Synergy Foundation 2014 Gay Games; Hospitality Web Site, Weathervane Playhouse; Friend of Hospitality, Dr. Mark Lyberger, Kent State University and Paul Hammond, University of Akron; and Hospitality Volunteer, Jo Anne Salge, Downtown Akron Volunteer Service. Board Chairman, Gregory Bean also presented the Chairman's Award to Steve & Jeannine Marks, Road Runner Akron Marathon founders for their dedication and service to the hospitality industry.
The Bureau produced the 8th annual Take Another Look Greater Akron Coupon Booklet. Available exclusively “online," residents are encouraged to rediscover their own communities through the eyes of a tourist with a variety of cost-savings offers. A button for the booklet is located on the Bureau’s homepage (www.visitakron-summit.org).
Additionally, the Bureau hosted the 7th annual Hospitality Scholarship Golf Tournament to benefit The University of Akron Summit College Hospitality Management Program. Proceeds from the tournament are used to fund the $2,000 Donald L. Patterson Hospitality Scholarship. To date, the scholarship has received $14,000 in tournament proceeds.
